The Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects, and their practical uses. We have a worldwide membership of over 7,000 members who are based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools and we are one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe.

VOLUNTARY OPPORTUNITIES

Below is a list of opportunities for our members to participate in our governance and publishing activities to support the work of the Society.  

Co-opted Trustee

The Microbiology Society is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. It is governed by a Board of Trustees who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006. The Board of Trustees operates in compliance with the Society’s Articles of Association and Charity Commission guidance on good governance.

From 2025, the Society is constituting a new Board of Trustees that will be comprised of the Society’s three Executive Officers (President, General Secretary and Treasurer) and three elected members, plus up to three external experts. The role of the Board is to govern the organisation, provide the strategic direction of the Society and ensure its long-term financial sustainability.

The Microbiology Society is specifically looking for candidates with expertise in either the academic publishing business or charitable fundraising to co-opt to the Board of Trustees.

Council and Committees Shadowing Scheme

Our Council and Committees Shadowing Scheme gives members an exclusive opportunity to gain insight into the inner working of the Society. Journal of Medical Microbiology Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Call for expressions of interest

Journal of Medical Microbiology is the go-to interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical trials, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

The Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medical Microbiology will play a key role in the journal, ensuring that we publish high-quality research, and are engaged with the microbiological community. You will also have responsibility for soliciting content for the journal, by suggesting reviews or original articles for submission. Your main tasks will be to work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and current Deputy Editor-in-Chief on editorial strategy for the journal. You will provide guidance on publishing ethics and governance, and help review Editor performance. You will be expected to contribute to the oversight of collections, and work with colleagues at the Society to help develop our community offering for the infection science community, and generate new content streams for the journal.

Person specification

  • Demonstrated excellence in an area of medical microbiology, preferably with a wide breadth of expertise. Preferably with clinical and/or veterinary experience, with an interest in infection science.
  • Have an excellent network of international contacts in a range of specialities in your discipline(s).
  • Previous editorial experience, preferably with Microbiology Society journals.
  • Maintain an active research profile. Preferably have some presence on social media, e.g. Twitter.
  • Have an understanding, or ideally have been a member, of the Microbiology Society, and the central role that publishing in society journals has in continuing their activities.

Journal of Medical Microbiology Senior Editor for Antimicrobial Resistance

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is the go-to interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary infectious diseases. The journal welcomes articles ranging from basic and molecular microbiology to clinical trials in bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Senior Editors of the Journal of Medical Microbiology play a vital role in the journal, ensuring that we publish high-quality research and are engaged with the microbiological community. A key part of the role will involve strategic development of the section and soliciting content, by suggesting reviews or original articles for submission. Your main tasks will be oversight of the section’s performance, including Editors in your panel, monitoring submissions and published articles in the journal, and assisting new Editors in your section with decision making. You will also be involved in leading at least one article collection during your time as Senior Editor.

This position is a public-facing role, and the Senior Editor acts as a representative of the Society. The position is open to any Full, Full Concessionary or Honorary members of the Society, and those who are not members of the Society. New Editors will be trained in Editorial Manager.

Person specification

  • Demonstrated excellence in the field of microbiology and AMR.
  • Maintain an active research profile with a minimum of 25 publications at the time of appointment.
  • Essential to have some previous editorial experience in a relevant microbiology journal. Previous editorial experience in a Microbiology Society journal is desirable.
  • Preferably have some presence on social media, e.g. Twitter, Linkedin.
  • Have an excellent network of international contacts in a range of specialties in your discipline(s).
  • Be prepared to submit a review or original paper to the journal during the term of office.
  • Have an understanding of the role of the Microbiology Society in promoting microbiology and the central role that publishing in society journals has in continuing these efforts.

Journal of General Virology has been publishing peer-reviewed research for more than 50 years. We recognise the importance of virology as a unique discipline within microbiology, and actively collaborate with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to support the global virology community.

Editors of Journal of General Virology play a key role in the journal, ensuring that we publish high-quality research and are engaged with the microbiological community. Your main tasks will be arranging peer review of manuscripts submitted to the journal. You will also have opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction of the journal.

Person specification

  • Demonstrated excellence in the field of virology, in particular Prokaryotic Viruses, Animal – Positive-strand RNA Viruses and Animal – Double-stranded RNA Viruses.
  • Maintain an active virology research profile.
  • Have an excellent network of international contacts a range of specialties in the discipline
  • Have an understanding of the role of the Microbiology Society in promoting microbiology in the UK and the central role that publishing in society journals has in continuing these efforts.

JOURNAL OF GENERAL VIROLOGY BOARD OF REVIEWERS: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Journal of General Virology has been publishing peer-reviewed research for more than 50 years. We recognise the importance of virology as a unique discipline within microbiology, and actively collaborate with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to support the global virology community. Journal of General Virology is looking for virologists who work on aspects of animal, plant, insect, bacterial and fungal viruses, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, molecular biology and immunology, virus–host interactions and antiviral compounds to join the Board of Reviewers. Peer reviewers play a critical role in ensuring that high-quality science is published, allowing us to further advance the understanding of microbiology. 

If you are interested in joining the Journal of General Virology Board of Reviewers, you will need to: 

  • Be qualified to a minimum PhD level or equivalent in a relevant subject. 
  • Be an active researcher. 
  • Have five or more recent publications in peer-reviewed journals.
